The amazing Coffee Bar Cowboys will be playing live in Cafe Portico @ The Terrace on Thursday 22 April. Doors will be open at 7.30pm and the music will start at around 8.00pm.

The Coffee Bar Cowboys are Roger 'The Thin White Duke' Williams Washboard and Harmonica, Keith Luckey Vocals, Guitar and Tea Chest, and Mr. Maurice Mulligan who, as well as singing, plays an awesome array of instruments including Double Bass, Guitar, Mandolin and Ukulele.

The boys (sic) play a selection of 50s & 60s pop, R & B, skiffle, country and blues. The Coffee Bar Cowboys can sometimes be found busking 'uphill' in Lincoln.If you want a good time and an evening of carbon neutral entertainment then these are the boys for you!

Blueprint: Film smell the scent of success

Terrace based Blueprint: Film are a dynamic and vibrant film production company working throughout both the community and corporate sectors, however they are also unique as they are the only production company in the region to also be professionally 'creative' and work on innovative short and feature films which create success and interest from all over the world.
Blueprint: Film also receive massive support and backing from the UK Film Council, local screen agencies and authorities and now have two offices – one in Barton, North Lincolnshire and another in the heart of Lincolns city centre.
On the creative route Blueprint: Film are riding high with their latest short film, ‘Scent’ which was funded by Screen Yorkshire and the UK Film Council. Written and Directed by Immingham born Darren Bolton, ‘Scent’ follows the harrowing tale of John, an elderly man gripped with grief following the death of his wife Patricia. Unable to accept his loss John keeps her death a secret, choosing instead to keep Patricia’s body at home in bed. This quiet, sensitive film explores themes of love, loss and denial through a delicate observation of what is essentially a heart breaking, yet most intriguing situation.
‘Scent’ has got off to an amazing start on the festival circuit having recently screened as part of the Official Competition at the 26th European Film Festival in Lille and premiering at London Short Film Festival in January. And the success continues to grow as, ‘Scent’ has now also been accepted into two major local film festivals - Bradford International Film Festival where it will screen this Sunday and Monday (21st/22nd March) and also GLIMMER: The 8th Hull International Short Film Festival where it will be entered into the best Yorkshire Short Competition on Sunday 25th April - Which Blueprint: Film also won last year with their previous short film ‘Vigilante’.
And it that’s not enough confirmation has just been received that, ‘Scent’ will screen at the prestigious Newport Beach Film Festival in California, USA in April which attracts in excess of 50,000 people and also, ‘Scent’ will screen at London’s popular East End Film Festival in May, so as you can tell it’s a very exciting and busy few months.
This has solidified artistic director Darren Bolton’s company Blueprint: Film in its place as a professional, vibrant and innovative film company on the international film stage. Definitely the ones to watch this year!

This Lincoln artist comes highly recommended by Betty Cooper who had engaged Dante to perform to a group of highly respectable ladies who were swept away by his interpretation of restoration lute music and collasped into to laughter on hearing his cheeky performance of rude songs from this period. Definitely not suitable for those of a puritan disposition.

Remote Churches of Herefordshire
24 – 26 July

Enjoy a real treat by joining us to explore some unique churches that are hard to find without an experienced guide.

We will visit Rowlestone, a church associated with the Herefordshire School of Romanesque Sculpture, and Clockock with its chancel set out as it would have been in the 17th Century. Further churches include the famous Kilpeck with its fascinating carvings and Abbey Dore, which began as a Cistercian monastery and was restored by John Scudamore.

The church at Bacton and the church of St Margarets provide other historic gems. Bacton has one of only three stone depictions of Elizabeth I that she allowed and at St Margarets we will see an elaborately carved rood loft, that survived Edward VI’s order for destruction.

Other churches in the tour promise diverse surprises. Hoarwithy is an Italianate and Byzantine building that looks out of place but is the most exciting Victorian church in Herefordshire!

Brockhampton was designed by William Lethaby, a friend of William Morris, and was actively involved with the Arts and Crafts Movement which is reflected in its the architecture.The remote church in Michaelchurch nestles in its own private valley. It contains a striking Norman font and, of all things, a Roman altar to a deity worshipped at crossroads. At Garway we will see a church associated with the Knights Templar which displays the foundations of a round nave.

Café Portico at The Terrace is operating under new management.

The very talented Ellie Wade has put her considerable culinary experience as a chef and food connoisseur in to providing a new Café Portico experience. Most of you will have experienced Ellie’s fantastic recipes and creativity when Foogo was open in the Cornhill (before the brand was bought out and the shop closed last year), and for those of you who haven’t then a real treat awaits you!

Cafe Portico will be open between the hours of 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Ellie hopes to extent these hours at a later date.

Ellie is also planning a series of special events including open mic' (15 June and 20 July) and jazz evenings. Please keep a look out for further details.

Mark Chambers at London Zoo!

Mark Chambers (28), who works from The Terrace in Lincoln, was selected by London Zoo ,from hundreds of illustrators across the country, to redesign the children's section of the famous attraction.

Called Animal Adventure, the new children's zoo has been given a £2.3 million revamp and aims to immerse youngsters in the sights, sounds and smells of the animal kingdom.

The wild world of characters designed by Mr Chambers along with rhymes and play zones will bring young animal lovers face-to-face with red pandas, porcupines and prairie dogs.
"It's all part of a massive 10 year redevelopment of the zoo," said Mr Chambers, who is signed to the London-based Bright Agency. "Previously the zoo had used photographs of animals and it was all very proper and not much fun. They decided that they wanted to use illustrations and a different way of teaching kids about animals."

Two main child characters designed by Mr Chambers will guide children through a series of information boards in four different zones of the new zoo.

His work – which will be seen by around 1.2 million people each year – will even form the backdrop to the zoo's cafe and will be placed on souvenir pens and pencils.

Phil Holmes, interpretation developer at the zoo said Mr Chambers was the best illustrator they could find.
"Mark's illustrations were the perfect match for Animal Adventure," he said.

The Terrace is encouraging it's resident businesses to get involved with Earth Hour 2009 – the world’s largest global climate change event. We are joining Optima Graphic Design Consultants to invite you to simply turn of all non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Optima, which has produced graphics and packaging for WWF since 2000, is supporter of the global charity’s environmental aims and believes that charity not only begins at home, but it can also begin at work.As a business, The Terrace is conscious of its environmental responsibility. But it’s not just climate change that we’re promoting, what’s good for the environment can often be good for business. For example, Marina Rische is the seamstress who has worked on all of Optima’s promotional T-shirts for Earth Hour. Marina runs a small business in Lincoln undertaking bespoke tailoring and alterations. Marina was so impressed with the idea of switching off non-essential electricity for an hour in her shop that she’s introduced the practice every day. By simply switching-off her equipment and lights at lunchtime, Marina saved £70 last quarter. If turning off power can have such a dramatic effect for a small business, think what it could do for you.

Lincoln’s most recognised landmark, Lincoln Cathedral, will be switching off along with Lincoln Castle, The Collection, the Usher Art Gallery and the University of Lincoln. The Terrace is hoping that many other local attractions will participate as well. Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour to raise awareness of climate change. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights.

Global landmarks such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. This year, iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff are already committed to Earth Hour 2009.

Four Stories High is a brand new production written and performed by the young talent from
Neon, Lincoln’s newest and most creative youth theatre. The group is run by the professional
team at Zest Creative Arts through funding from the Youth Opportunities Fund.

The cast of 27 young people aged between 11 and 25 started writing the show in June 2008.
Four Stories High was inspired by the cast’s experiences of going to school and growing up.
Audiences will follow the story of the teachers, pupils and parents of Greymoor High School
as they journey through yet another academic year.

The show also includes original songs as well as music from artists such as The Ting Tings,
Sugababes, Ordinary Boys, Dizzee Rascal and Ciara.

Lynn Baker Off To New Zealand

It’s a busy start to the year for Terrace-based glass designer, Lynn Baker of Studio 14 . She will soon be wrapping up her beautifully handmade glass and shipping it across the world to New Zealand.

Lynn’s work has been selected to exhibit in the UKGift 09 show in Auckland. Organised by UK Trade & Investment, the 4-day show will be held at the British Consulate in March. Lynn’s work will also feature in the show catalogue which will be distributed to buyers, retailers and media throughout New Zealand.

Working from her studio at The Terrace in Lincoln’s Cultural Quarter, Lynn produces hand blown and kiln formed glass bowls, forms and illuminated panels. Lynn gets her inspiration from the changes in light as it travels across the naturally beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds. As the light reflects and refracts off the glass, each piece is both tactile and optically exciting.

Lynn said “I am very excited - this opportunity offers a great way to test out a market with little expense. I think that New Zealand would be a great outlet for my work and if I can generate sales and new buyers, then I hope to follow this up with a visit to Auckland within two years”.

New Artist In Residence at The Terrace

New Artist In Residence in Collection Studio at The Terrace.

David Harket is the new Artist In Residence in Collection Studio at The Terrace until 17th March.

David's project is to undertake visual research primarily in the form of drawings and other documentation such as photographs into selected landscape paintings of Peter De Wint in the collection of the Usher Gallery. Peter De Wint (1784-1849) was an English watercolourist working in the early 19th Century. David chose the work of Peter De Wint because the Usher Gallery holds a significant collection of this landscape painters’ work. In addition an important theme in David's own practice concerns an analysis of the depiction of landscape and an assessment of landscape painting as a genre.

This project is supported by a grant from the Arts Council England.

Peter De Wint produced a series of paintings and watercolours of Lincolnshire including views both in and around the County City of Lincoln itself during his frequent visits. David also has a personal connection with Lincoln. He was born in Lincoln and his childhood was spent in Lincoln and North Hykeham. David's research will concentrate on selected works which relate to Lincoln and Lincolnshire.

During the course of the residency David will visit where possible, some of the locations which De Wint depicted in and around Lincoln, making his own observational notes and documentation. From the Usher Gallery's records David has compiled a list of De Wint's work which relates to such locations.

In order to develop his artistic practice David had conceived the idea of researching and making work in response to an existing collection of paintings in a public gallery. David's residency at here provides the opportunity and context within which he can realise this concept.

Fine Art and Ceramics Courses for the Over Fifties

Romany artist Daniel DeAston BA HONS (ta Moody Artist) is holding classes in fine art and ceramics in his workshop at The Terrace.

The scheme is funded by the Millennium Awards Trust, which means that people over the age of fifty and people with disabilities only have to pay for materials used while the general charge for other people is just five pounds an hour plus cost of materials used.

Courses are available every weekday between 10am to Midday and from 2 until 4 pm. Evening classes can be arranged on request.

African dancers in Lincoln High Street marked the opening of the Mystery In Stone Exhibition at The Terrace.

Invited guests attended a ceremony in which the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Ron Hills, declared the exhibition of Zimbabwean Sculpture open.

The sculptures are organized around eight themes that represent shared human relationships, emotions and experiences. They represent: The Family, Custom and Legend, Social Comment, The Role of the Elders, The Spirit World, The Role of Women, Village Life, and Nature and Environment:

The exhibition will be open between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday between 28th October and 21st November and additionally between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 15th November. Admission is free.

Double Award For Creative Terrace

Two creative businesses based at The Terrace have scooped national awards as the city’s reputation as a creative hub goes from strength to strength.

Ted Brewer, manufacturer of bespoke electric violins, whose most famous client is Vanessa Mae, scooped the award for ‘Best Export Innovation’ at the Music Industry Association Awards. The Award includes a free stand at next year’s Messe Frankfurt Music Industry Exhibition, which is generally recognised as the largest music industry exhibition in the World. The ceremony was held at the Sheraton Hotel, Park Lane, London on Monday 14 October.

Then on Wednesday 14th October Mark Chambers of Mark Chambers Illustration, Lincoln, won the Children’s Book Award of the National Association for Special Educational Needs at a ceremony held at the Russell Hotel in London.

Both winners are based at the creative industries workspace, The Terrace, in Lincoln. The Terrace Manager, Keith Luckey said: “All of us here at The Terrace feel very proud to be associated with Ted and Mark and are confident that they will continue to go from strength to strength. This is also a fantastic achievement for Lincoln and can only support our work to see Lincoln grow as a creative centre.”

Ted, whose company is called Ted Brewer Violins, based on the top floor of The Terrace, said: "I am absolutely over the moon with this award because it is presented by fellow music industry professionals. So far as I am aware this is the first major award to be won by a company based at The Terrace but I feel confident that many others will follow."

Mark’s winning book, was published by Tango Books last February, and is entitled Best Friends. It is about a disabled boy in a wheelchair and his best friend (a girl) who pretend they’re pirates on a ship, mountain climbers, astronauts, explorers and Olympic sprinters…. But when they are not playing make believe they also have a great time because they’re best friends!

On winning the award Mark said: “I am overwhelmed that my work has been recognised and appreciated. I am also pleased to be bringing the award back to Lincoln and The Terrace.”

Representatives of businesses based at The Terrace joined Wayne Hemingway and civic leaders for the official opening of ‘The Terrace’ on Wednesday 24th September. The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Ron Hills; City Council Portfolio holder for Economy, Tourism and Culture, Councillor Hilton Spratt; and representatives from the funding partners and creative industries sector also attended.

During the ceremony Wayne Hemingway unveiled a Plaque, and refreshments were served by The Terrace’s very own Café Portico.

For Wayne Hemingway, projects that encourage creativity and innovation are an inspiration. On ‘The Terrace’, Wayne said: “All towns and cities should do what Lincoln is doing with “The Terrace”. The creative industries are the second largest sector of the economy, with an annual contribution of over £60 billion. The UK is becoming known as THE hotbed of creativity. The Terrace is a great investment for Lincoln’s future prosperity as well as its cultural well being.”

Wayne Hemingway at The Terrace

Wayne Hemingway MBE will officially declare the Terrace open, on Wednesday the 24th of September.

Having started the now worldwide established fashion company Red or Dead from a clothing stall in London’s Camden and Kensington Markets, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway managed to break into the highly competitive fashion world.

With 21 consecutive London Fashion Week appearances, and three unprecedented prestigious British Fashion Council’s Streetstyle Designer of the Year Awards in 1996, 1997 and 1998, the pair who met at a disco in Burnley, sold the company for a multi-million pound figure to start an affordable and social design business Hemingway Design.

“We fell in to Red or Dead with no money and fell out with lots; but most of all it was a challenge and fantastic fun from beginning to end,” said Wayne. “We like to think that we played a part in removing the stigma from shopping for cool stuff on the high street and paved the way for forward thinkers to put the likes of Top Man and Top Shop before overpriced and over marketed labels.”

Born in 1961, Wayne and Gerardine are now responsible for some of the country’s most stunning and awe inspiring architecture. Completed projects include ‘The Staiths Southbank,’ a sizeable home development site on the banks of the River Tyne in Gateshead, and ‘The Bridge Dartford’, a development of 1000 designer homes in Kent.

Wayne and Gerardine have won a series of high profile awards including Housing Design Awards for the best large project and Building Magazine’s ‘Best Housing-Led Regeneration Project.’

This summer will also see the transformation of an old building on the Boscombe seafront to Hemingway designed ‘Super Surf Pods’ which will accompany Europe’s first artificial surf reef.
Wayne and Gerardine were each awarded an MBE for services to the design industry, in the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

"MYSTERY IN STONE” an exhibition of premier Zimbabwean stone sculptures will be held at The Terrace, Grantham Street, Lincoln, from 27 October 2008 through 21 November 2008.
This highly expressive contemporary stone art of African artists from Zimbabwe, many from the Shona Tribe, speaks their deep concern, feelings and experiences of the environment around their cultural beliefs.

Zimbabwean stone sculpture is a profound, deeply human expression of the African people that transcends time and space. Sculptors say their ancestors' spirits come in dreams and visions to reveal themselves in images that dwell within the stone. These "voices in stone" can almost be heard through the awe-inspiring sculptures, which tell tales of life in traditional and contemporary works of art. In this way, sculptors release life within the stone and their spirits soar within the collective reality of the African people.

Mark Chambers Illustr8ion

Mark Chambers has been illustrating since 2003 after graduating from the University of Lincoln, Lincoln school of Art and Design with a BA in Illustration.

Mark’s work was subsequently selected for an exhibition at the Kensington Institute in London for the D&AD design awards. His work received praise from various sources, public and professional including a lead from Bloomsbury. Whilst exhibiting he was spotted by an Agent for the Bright Agency who he signed up too and has been with ever since.

He has had a number of projects published here in the UK and abroad. Clients he has worked for include Random-House, Egmont, Simon and Schuster, ‘Happy House’ Korea, Macmillan, Scholastic, Oxford University Press, Learning Wood, Time, Primary Choice. Mark has just had two picture books commissioned with award winning publishers Templar.

Mark likes to work in all areas of his craft, but he particularly likes illustrating children’s books and is currently writing and illustrating stories of his own. He has lived in Lincoln for the past 8 years and moved to his new place of work, The Terrace back in March of this year.

Louise Bell established ‘Lulabell Design’ in 2007.

The company is based at the Terrace in Lincolns Cultural Quarter.

After graduating in 2000 in Textile Design Louise worked very successfully in the Fashion industry preparing seasonal collections of embellished textiles for the high end fashion market, where she established a sort after reputation.

Louise is now using her experience within her new company, continuing her design for the industry.

She has also established the ‘Lulabell’ clothing range consisting of individual ‘one off’ customised garments and accessories. She often utilises vintage and used fabrics, old buttons, ribbons, trimmings and trinkets to create ‘new’ recycled eco-friendly affordable fashion.

Ted Brewer Violins

Ted Brewer, who has been designing and producing electric violins since 1993, and whose most famous client is Vanessa Mae, moved into two workshops at The Terrace on 1st August 2007.

Ted produces individual hand crafted instruments, as well as the Vivo² a departure into more readily, widely available violins and his latest design the Sirius.

The instruments are assembled by hand in the company workshops at The Terrace in Lincoln. The result is a strong polycarbonate frame available in blue and purple colors or clear, all with metallic fleck, as well as in a completely clear body option.

Standard high-quality features include: ebony fingerboard and chinrest; piezo charge pick-up; digitally-controlled analog charge amplifier; Grover machine heads; fine adjusters built into an aluminum tailpiece; and Tomastic Dominant strings.

“The sound is stunning,” says Ted, “as a result of a new carbon-fiber bridge design and our advanced TBV audio system. For more extrovert users, a built-in sound-to-light facility brings two vertical banks of super-bright LEDs into operation, sending light pulsing along the length of the instrument in response to the music.”

Finger-light, microprocessor-controlled touch-buttons within the violin body provide fast and easy control of volume and tone. Settings are stored by the processor memory even when the battery (supplied with the violin) is removed. There is a ¼-inch jack-socket and a separate mini-jack headphone socket for use when practicing.

UK musical instrument magazine Music Mart wrote of the Vivo2: “You’ve got eye-catching good looks, a superb sound from a responsive instrument, easy controls and features, and your own personal light show! What more could a 21st century violinist require?”

Ted has been living in Lincoln for three years now and has moved his business to The Terrace. He says; “I chose the workshops (at The Terrace) as they are well designed, have plenty of natural light and the building is in the centre of the city. I think the whole concept of a building dedicated to the creative industries is fantastic.”

Plant A Tree

Root Studio, The Terrace’s own eco friendly Graphic Design are set to go one step further in tackling climate change! By promising to plant a tree for every new client they receive in 2008/9 they hope to make the county’s businesses become greener.
Root Studio’s founders, Tom Bradley and Lydia Sibson say:

All trees planted by the studio will be British broad-leaved trees planted within the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire countryside. Root Studio are hoping that their latest campaign will have a positive impact on others within the local community, helping them to become more aware of the climate change issue.
This is not the first green idea that Root Studio have had since they arrived on the scene in 2007. Exhibition of Paintings by Natasha Panell

An Exhibition of Paintings in Water Colour and Oils by Natasha Panell Was held at The Terrace From Monday 14 July to Friday 18 July 2008.

Natasha Pannell (Artist Name – Topolnyak), was trained as a teacher of art in Russia.

On her arrival in Lincoln, she was pleased to obtain a position as a tutor with J.R. Ruddock Ltd. Teaching watercolour painting to students of all ages and abilities, Natasha enjoys her work very much.

Her students provide her with a lot of new ideas and give valuable feedback. As an artist she is very versatile, preferring to use different mediums to paint different subjects.

Her greatest enjoyment comes from painting floral compositions and her main inspiration is colour. Natasha's work was accepted for both the 2007 Patchings exhibition and at 'The Hub', Sleaford (Celebrating the creative talent of North Kesteven). This, her first solo exhibition was a great success.

Meeting Rooms For Hire and Virtual Post Box Service available at The Terrace

You can hire a conference or a meeting room at The Terrace.

The largest room, suitable for up to 40 people, is equipped with a digital projector, overhead projector and screen.

There is a fully equipped boardroom, suitable for 10 to 12 people equipped with digital projector and interactive white board. There are also two other small meeting rooms.

There is a Virtual Post Box Service available for artists and people involved with businesses in the creative sector. This service enables you to utilise The Terrace address for all your incoming mail. Your post will be left in reception for collection or can be redirected.

Shen Fan @ The Collection Studio Artist In Residence @ The Terrace

Shen Fan is one of the leading abstract artists in China and has travelled from his native Shanghai to undertake a residency with The Collection in the new Studio space at The Terrace. For his residency with the Collection, Shen has decided he would like to make a photographic and sound work about the people of Lincoln and their feelings about The Collection and the city.
